Fundraising for Monasteries

For 10 years now the Cabramatta Parish has been actively  supporting the Monasteries in the far south of NSW.

These are the  Presentation Sisterhood (PS) and Holy Transfiguration Monastery (HTM).

2016 was a record year where 220 people attended to listen to Abbott Sergei from the HTM give a talk on ‘Monasticism: The Australian Dreamtime’ and where $25,000 raised for the Monasteries.

In 2017 there will be two major fundraising initiatives to benefit the Monasteries: a fundraising dinner on Sunday 28 May and a large (200:200) raffle.

Fundraising Dinner

A fundraising dinner will be held at 5.00pm Sunday 28 May 2017 (6 weeks after Easter). This will be in the Church Hall / Fontana Amorosa Function Centre of the Greek Church of Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene in Forbes Street Liverpool. The Cabramatta Church Hall is no longer big enough, as was witnessed by all those who attended in June 2016.

During the evening there will be three Acts:

Act 1: a performance of sacred music in Greek from the                               Melisma Ensemble  directed by Dimitri Koubaroulis

Act 2:  a talk / powerpoint presentation from Abbot Sergei (from the HTM) on

“Hagia Sophia: The Mother of Churches”

Act 3: a performance of sacred music in Old Church Slavonic from the                       Russian Orthodox Choir directed by Andrei Laptev

There will be a raffle where ticket prices will be:

  • $5 each,
  • 5 for $20,
  • 15 for $50
  • 40 for $100

An auction of highly desirable items will create proceeds for the Monasteries. The Church car park is relatively small and there is on street parking available nearby.

Starting at 4.30pm on the day, the Nuns from the Presentation Sisterhood will be selling handiworks, jams, chocolates, hand made soaps etc. and the Monks from the HTM will be selling ceramic works, candles, books and other items from their kiosk.

There will be a Lucky Dip where, for $20, every ticket wins a prize.

Entry will be $50 per adult and $15 for a child in the crèche located in St Raphael’s School (next to the function venue). Seating is at round tables of 12 where a mini buffet will be placed onto each table: therefore, no need to queue up.

The start time is listed as 5.00 pm and we will have prayer for meal at 5.45pm. The early start is designed so that the function can finish earlier and people can get home at a reasonable hour.

Bookings Counter

32 tables have been booked, which represents an attendance of:

432 and there are only

2 vacant tables (of 12) available to be booked. These tables (23 & 24) will remain as unreserved and allows for people to walk up on the night to purchase tickets at the door (cash or card).

Large Raffle

A 200:200 raffle will be drawn at the fundraising dinner in Liverpool on Sunday 28 May 2017. Tickets are $200 each and only 200 will be sold. Tickets will be released to various Orthodox communities (Russian, Serbian, Greek, Antiochian) in Sydney and Russian Orthodox communities in Melbourne, Geelong, Canberra and Brisbane (including Gold Coast). The cash prizes in this raffle are:

  1. $15,000
  2. $2,000
  3. $1,000
  4. $1,000
  5. $1,000

Tickets go on sale in November 2016 and will be distributed to key contacts in the Orthodox communities mentioned above. Once the last ticket is sold, the Presentation Sisterhood gets a guaranteed $10,000 for their construction fund and the HTM gets a guaranteed $10,000.
